PARTING SHOT

(Emery Pike)

Goin’ to work, it’s on your mind, sweet harmony-you can’t seem to find.

Life goes slow when you hit this bind, it’s lonely and dark and your world don’t shine.

Watch that clock, those damn tickin’ hands, another day done workin’ in-Glory Land.

Will you love her or leave her now, make your stand,

Goin’ back and forth is a fool’s plan.

Why are we up and down all the time?  I’d like so much—to read your mind.

Now we’re in love, now we’re not, why don’t you give her-

A parting shot, a parting shot, a parting shot.

Get back in love now, get back fast. Your job, her job, they won’t last.

When it comes down to the bottom line,we got love and life and limited time.

They all say that you should’nt keep score, then why do I feel like you’ve shut the door?

One day at a time is a remedy, my love is for real, how I wish you’d see.

Emery’s Notes:

This song was written after a heated argument with my wife. In any relationship, despite your love and commitment to your partner, there are moments when tempers flare, and you just don’t want to be around each other.  Particularly when you are newlyweds. I went downstairs to the studio, picked up the guitar and  found the chords pretty quickly. The lyrics came later, and were pretty difficult to write. I was trying to reflect the tension and how it could build to a “point of no return”. I guess those of you who have ever been through a divorce can relate to this tune.

The guitar parts on the end were done with an odd assortment of guitars and amps, some lines double-tracked and some not. The “centerfold” shot in the album liner notes was me tracking some of the lead guitar for this song. I hope you’re as pleased with the results as I am. Jon Pratt did a particularly outstanding job on the drums.
