ACROSS THE YEARS
(Emery Pike)
It’s
been twelve long years since I saw you last, I’m a completely different
man.
I
got a boy at home and a wife I love, but at times I recall my past.
We
had five short months of love lit days, and tranquil nights alone.
When
I moved away I had the brokenest heart, that any young boy has known.
Oh girl, you were so far away. I knew that tears were
in your eyes.
I’d look up at the moon and sing this song, wishin’
you were by my side.
Goodbye my love, I’m on my way; all I’ve got is
moonlight to guide the way.
I guess I’ll wander on to another lonely day;
helplessly hoping I’m coming back to stay.
I would sit in school and wonder why; is love useless
when you say goodbye?
Tried to forget between the pain and the hurt; I found
that time heals all now, of this I am sure.
So I’m reachin’ out, across the years, I wanna hear
your voice again.
Tell me you’re fine, tell me life’s divine, say you
don’t regret a thing.
As time goes by, and our lives change; I’ll think, of
you now and then.
And I want you to know, before I go, I’ll always be
your friend.
Hello sweetheart I’m here today; with a joyful heart
to send your way.
And I wish you the best each and every day;
Thanks for the memories, they’re with me always.
Thanks for the memories, they’re with me always.
Yes thanks for the memories, they’re with me always.

Emery’s Notes:
I grew
up in the family of a career US Army officer, which means that you get to
move every summer to a new duty station. Since you never really know what
settling down is like, its not necessarily a bad thing, until you grow up
and take an interest in the opposite sex. Wow! Leaving my first “real love”
was gut wrenching, so, like most musicians, I needed to write a song about
it. In this case, it was many years after the “event”, but the chorus bit
is authentic and stayed with me for many years until I could partner it up
with the rest of the lyrics.
I was going for the feel of
McCartney’s first solo album or “Ram”; lots of self played instruments and
not a real “slick” or polished sound. I’m real proud of the vocal harmonies
on this tune---some of which were done on the first take!
By the way her name was
Karin.
